Indian stock market instrument search: look beyond the symbol

Check the exchange, instrument key, segment, lot size and chart context when searching Indian stocks, indices or derivative contracts.

A familiar name is only the starting point

Search results can include several instruments related to a company, an index or an underlying asset. A display name is convenient for reading; it is not enough to establish identity. Check the exchange and segment before opening a chart. Do not assume that two similar symbols refer to the same listing or contract.

Match the instrument key across the workflow

Upstox documents instrument keys for identifying instruments across its APIs and provides instrument data files. KAVIX uses an imported India instrument catalogue to keep searches and downstream requests tied to an identifier. The search result, historical chart, current quote and generated plan should reference the same instrument.

For contracts, inspect the additional fields

Derivative searches require attention to the contract’s identifying fields, such as expiry and the applicable option type or strike where relevant. Lot size and tick size affect valid quantities and prices. Use the current instrument information provided for that contract instead of carrying assumptions from another contract or an older example.

Search availability is not trading availability

An instrument appearing in a catalogue does not establish that a broker account can trade it, that a licensed quote is available, or that KAVIX has a released scanner for it. Check each capability separately. In particular, a discoverable futures instrument does not mean the Futures scanner has been released.

Check the chart context

Historical candles describe their requested interval and dates. A daily chart should not be interpreted as a stream of current intraday prices. If a chart is incomplete or a request fails, keep that state visible. Missing candles should not be reconstructed into plausible-looking price history for a production screen.

Use the current KAVIX boundary

The India workspace should show supported instrument reads and actual data availability for your account. Broader scanner horizons are in preparation, and real execution remains disabled. When reporting a search issue, send the visible instrument identifier and error message to support without including broker tokens or credentials.
